Cyprus In the 1960s and early 1970s, you couldn't find a swankier seaside resort than Varosha in Cyprus' Famagusta. Built in 1959, it was said to be an ode to aluminum. There would be an orchestra, a bevy of dancing girls, a crooner, and, more and more frequently, a comic. They certainly meant something to Martin and Lewis; the buzz on the duo was so strong that Hal Wallis, a producer at Paramount, came to see them and signed them for a film contract. Gregory was a hit, the evening made national attention (and Gregorys career), and the Chicago Playboy Club became a groundbreaking venue for artists like Lenny Bruce, Moms Mabley, and Redd Foxx, who required a hip audience that appreciated blue material, but not cheap material.
