Yet exports of meat and butter boomed. The land war of 1879-1882 followed. Lured to the New World by a promise of cheap land and a fresh start, Irish immigrants began arriving in droves starting in 1718. In the 4th century Christianity spread to Ireland, probably through trade with England and France. In 1858 another movement called the Fenians was formed. Irish Catholic parents recognized the charter schools as a form of bribery and only sent their children there during times of famine, withdrawing them when conditions improved. In 1772, the Irish Parliament set up 11 workhouses for the unemployed poor, but that was not enough to make a significant impact. This disaster killed hundreds of thousands of people. The English also founded the towns of Athenry, Drogheda, Galway, and New Ross. However, hundreds of thousands of people died each year of starvation and disease such as cholera, typhus, and dysentery. Concern for the education of children became a fashionable topic of conversation among wealthy women. These measures meant that by 1778 only 5% of the land in Ireland was owned by Catholics. As a result, emigration continued. Furthermore, some industry developed in Ireland at that time. At the bottom were slaves. Another Act of 1704 stated that Catholics could not buy land. They also created burial places called dolmens, which consist of massive vertical stones with horizontal stones on top, and passage graves which have a central passage lined and roofed with stones with burial chambers leading off it. The children also swam and took other forms of exercise including swimming and taking walks along the seashore. Irish Catholics made up the Irish poor who constituted 80 percent of the population and owned less than one-third of the land. He hoped Ireland would become economically self-sufficient and Irish industries would develop. (Peel was reluctant to give away free food). By March 2017 unemployment fell to 6.4%.
