From Hilo, take 19 going west until Honokaa and take Highway 240, looking for signs for Waipi'o Valley. Some of my teen/young adult sons did mess around in the water at Pololu, but it isn't advisable. Wear good shoes for the descent/ascent part. There is a bench at the end of the trail overlooking the Honokane Nui Valley. You can see the steep Waipio Valley access road, the black sand beach, and taro fields. We went to the big island during our honeymoon. Waipio is more of a slog up and down and will take more time but Honoka'a town nearby is a nice stopping off point coming or going. We were recommended to save time for this hike by 4 different locals.
