With a population of less than 75,000, Kauai is truly a small-town island, littered with open space, protected preserves, and old plantation history. It is possible you will encounter people from the Pololu Valley Steward Program at the lookout. Awesome. From Hilo, take 19 going west until Honokaa and take Highway 240, looking for signs for Waipi'o Valley. Some of my teen/young adult sons did mess around in the water at Pololu, but it isn't advisable. Wear good shoes for the descent/ascent part. Syr101 - Just a note that there aren't any food concessions at the beaches so bring some food or pick up some along the way if you're planning to eat at the beach.

Visiting the Waipi'o Lookout is must for me every trip. You wouldnt have time to hike down. The ocean is very powerful here, no swimming! The path washes away, so you have to do it on a dry day, and when you get down, its a bit anticlimactic. Thank you Amy! Savor the Black Sand Beach. Towards the back the valley splits into many 'fingers', each one with its own waterfall. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park near Halemaumau Crater. Theres only just a few spots in the actual parking lot but tons of parking on the side of the road leading in. 10/10 would do again. There is a bench at the end of the trail overlooking the Honokane Nui Valley. You can see the steep Waipio Valley access road, the black sand beach, and taro fields. We went to the big island during our honeymoon. Waipio is more of a slog up and down and will take more time but Honoka'a town nearby is a nice stopping off point coming or going. We were recommended to save time for this hike by 4 different locals.
